In which Renato anticipates war for the foreseeable future, and Isabella secures fiendish allies from the Burning Night.
Plot Developments
- Renato commissioned his duergar craftsman, Targal, to construct a "light saber" prototype utilizing the rare ruby of his cannon. His aim was to eventually outfit the Vale's forces with red laser weapons, however the rare gem is found in only one mine, owned by Targal's former master, the Architect of Misery. Though protected from normal scrying, the dark dwarf promised to work with the Coven of the All-Seeing Eye to discern the location.
- Renato renewed his commitment to an alliance with Strahd in so far as their mutual enemy Azalin Rex was concerned, whose agents had been seen on the edges of the Vale, and who already suffused Barovia. There is a minor conflict of interest, though, as Strahd is also pit against the Raven Knights and Council of Burgomeisters, factions Renato, and more so his sister and lover, helped establish to begin with.
- Renato has, for the time being, allowed the construction of a temple to Pazuzu in his woods, erected by the resident kenku, like a great, wicker tree risen high above the normal pines and birch.
- Once in Saspien, Renato summoned the entirety of his Gilda to begin preparations for the Tir'bukkan invasion come sundown.
- Isabella discovered a Door to Anywhere she'd never noticed before, capable of transporting her to any place Hecate holds sway. It seems to be invisible to others.
- Isabella used her door to visit the Cliffs of Dirae, where the imposing creature Mastema, Queen of the Erinyes, dwelt. Still loyal to the Goddess, Mastema explained the majority of the infernal queens fought to preserve Hecate's claim to Hell, while the Archdukes had sided with the usurper Asmodeus. Malcanthet's betrayal, the failure of Hecate's first prophet (Aldric of the Dark), and the meddling of Mara had left Hell in a civil war that the queens are losing.
- Mastema gave Isabella a murder of 70 erinyes to fight for her in the battle for Saspien, which she brought back in disguise as 70 new, feminine gargoyles perched upon the Church of Delight's many ledges and spires.
