DC 20 History or Streetwise Check: Edmark is the second largest imperial port, dwarfed only by Liscari Artigo on the western shore. It was founded during the God King's lifetime, second oldest city in the Heartland, and steadily grew as the kingdom, then the empire, prospered. The population is predominantly Nors, but Azerbadi, Liscari, Tolernans, Otezuma, Umabi and even choice dwarves can be found within its walls. There are hundreds of ships docked, merchant and warship alike, berthed in either the city docks, the Wright Shipyard or in the sheltered lagoon beneath Fort Vigilance.
Edmark is a lifeline of trade between Holy Empire and the Azerbadi, a key naval outpost for the protection of the Heartland and its waterways, an important economic power with all five consortium and their affiliate guilds represented, and the site of one of the Emperor's most notorious prisons in Stonegut. Perhaps most important, besides the berthed navy itself, is The House of Wright's steady construction of new vessels for the growing armada. Inquisition and Sons of Nor presence is high, and the ruling Duchess Kitia Lichter is wholly loyal to Endymion.
Kitia is a forty-something year old noblewoman hiding her spinster status behind a cosmopolitan facade, underneath the makeup and parties is a cruel and calculating governor, who keeps well-informed and well-involved thanks to her men in the Port Authority, Edmarkian Constabulary, City Watch and Toll Collectors.
Historically Edmark was a Falken city, but with the rise of the Emperor, they lost their hold and were supplanted by the minor House of Lichter (a lower branch of the Norson family). Yet not every Falken could be purged, specifically the House of Wright, the city's master shipwrights and carpenters. Despite twenty years gone since the change in rulers, a subtle yet palpable rivalry and test of wills goes on between the Lichters and the Wrights, mirroring the larger political struggle between the Norsons and the Falkens across the empire.
